Dinner With a Side of Design
25, 26, 28 April
7:30 - 10:30pm
The Irish Heather, 212 Carrall Street, Vancouver

The concept: Imagine inviting some of your city officials to dinner. You serve amazing food and drink and let some designers and other members of the community join in. You pose a topic to the group and to facilitate the dinner conversation, include a designed tablecloth that becomes a place to visualise the conversations that occur. This activity acts as a conduit for new ideas to emerge when considering how to collectively work toward a common future. By treating complexity with a measure of camaraderie, we are encouraged to see each other and our collective problems differently.

Our three themes for these intimate and interactive dinners are sustainability, culture and economics. How does Cameron Sinclair define sustainability? Ashwini Deshpande brings an Indian viewpoint to culture. And Helen Walters will be part of the table talking economics.

For more info and a sneak peak inside the process and what to expect at the event, download the Participant Guide.

Workshop: UX Design for the web
10am-12noon, Friday 30 April
VFS Web Café 390 W Hastings
Presented by: Steve Fisher, Palantir.net

UX Design for the web is a hot topic, but far too often we find it too hard to pin down so we just touch the surface and don’t explore the depths. As it is becoming something of a de-facto standard it is in our best interest as interactive designers to understand the disipline. No longer something that has to always be hugely complex and costly, we’ll cover the “back to basics” approach to UX design in this workshop.

Questions answered by the workshop:

  • With so many different people using the web there should be a best practice, intuitive user experience for the design. So why do Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress and others do it so differently? Take an inside look at the UX process used in developing some of the leading CMS admins.

  • What is UX design?

  • Simple vs. Complex?
  •
How do different website designers handle the UX design process?

  • What are some best practices for UX design?
  •
What are the benefits to the end user?
  •
How do you organise IA to simplify the user experience?
  •
Can a simple design work in a complex situation?

  • How do you use UX patterns to speed up a design?

  • How do you create a solution that will work in a broad context?

  • What do I(we) recommend?

The workshop is included in your conference registration, however we recommend that you reserve your seat.

Establishing a National Profile for Graphic Design Education in Canada
Friday 30 April 1:00 - 5:00 pm
Emily Carr University of Art + Design  Vancouver, BC
1399 Johnston Street (Granville Island)
Lecture Theatre, South Building, (Room 301)

What do prospective students need to know to make an informed decision about their future study in graphic design? How do we as educators define graphic design education? classify institutions? quantify program outcomes? There are a myriad of resources, but none provide a comprehensive view about graphic design education in Canada. The focus of this round table is to discuss how a national profile for post-secondary graphic design education can support the profession, prospective students, educators and the public.

  1. Why is Canada different?
  2. How Canadian graphic design educators perceive their programs
  3. What is an educator’s community?
  4. Big questions: Break-out Session
  5. Future directions
